Vascular Surgery long form

Vascular diseases can result in aneurysms or strokes that are fatal or cause lifelong disability. Early diagnosis and treatment is key to helping prevent complications, disability, and even death.

The Division of Vascular Surgery at HackensackUMC includes the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory and Endovascular Surgery. Using the latest in equipment and technology, physicians in the Non-Invasive Laboratory can painlessly evaluate the status of cerebrovascular and peripheral vein circulation, either by referral from your physician or on an emergency basis if you have deep vein thrombosis (also known as DVT). Our Lab is fully accredited and we perform more than 19,000 diagnostic procedures each year for both inpatients and outpatients.

Our board-certified surgeons combine clinical expertise with advanced technology to diagnose and treat the full range of vascular disorders, in many cases using minimally invasive techniques. To perform these procedures, our vascular surgeons use special techniques and instruments. These endovascular (inside the blood vessel) procedures require only a small puncture or incision in an artery or vein. When appropriate, these types of procedures can shorten recovery time. Minimally invasive procedures are not the right choice for every person, so in some cases, surgeons may have to perform traditional open surgery.

Some of the conditions we treat surgically include:
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm, which can rupture and cause death
  • Thoracic aortic disease
  • Carotid artery disease, which can cause stroke
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Vein conditions, such as varicose veins and venous insufficiency
  • Blood clots in the legs and embolism
  • Chronic leg swelling
  • Leg ulcers

In collaboration with specialists from other departments and divisions, such as cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists, and interventional cardiologists, we devise a treatment plan for each patient that is designed to provide the best possible outcomes.
