About Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

The Department of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care provides care to severely injured and critically ill patients surrounding the greater Hackensack metropolitan area.

Equipped with special facilities, advanced technology, and highly-trained professionals, we operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide care for trauma patients who have suffered serious injury. We provide specialized, intensive to people who are seriously or critically ill or injured, and the close monitoring of patients whose conditions are unstable.

Our Trauma Center is a Level II Regional Trauma Center as designated by the state of New Jersey and the American College of Surgeons. This designation means that we provide definitive care for trauma patients, regardless of the severity of the injuries. We are staffed and ready to receive patients with life-threatening injuries at any time of the day or night. And, our Emil Buehler Helipad also operates 24 hours a day, allowing Medevac transport of patients directly from the scene of an injury or between facilities.

Our trauma bays, resuscitation suite and surgical intensive care unit (SICU) are equipped with the most advanced monitoring, imaging, and life support technologies to ensure that all patients receive state-of-the-art care at all times.

Because trauma often involves multiple organ systems, our program is highly collaborative. We work closely with specialists from many other disciplines across HackensackUMC, including the emergency department, and other specialties, including surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedic surgery, and anesthesiology. We are also actively involved in providing continuing medical education for our colleagues.
