Thoracic Surgery Procedures

Our Center is home to a robust lung cancer treatment program, and we also treat benign diseases of the lung that require surgical treatment. In addition to treating primary thoracic tumors, we treat patients whose cancer has metastasized from other locations to the lungs, chest wall or mediastinum. Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • Complications caused by gastroesophageal reflux

  • Emphysema

  • Esophageal cancer

  • Lung cancer

  • Hyperhidrosis

  • Mediastinal masses

  • Tumors of the chest wall

The latest technologies and advanced surgical techniques

All of our surgeons are experts in the latest minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques and patients are always offered the most up-to-date treatment options available. Every person and every disease is different, and there are a wide variety of procedures available. Each patient’s surgical plan is designed to meet his or her needs based on the individual disease and personal preferences. Our goal is always to provide you with personalized care, and the type of surgery and treatment that will give you the best possible outcomes.

We have all the latest imaging technologies and diagnostic capabilities to assist us in the diagnosis and staging of your condition. All of our cancer patients are cared for in coordination with The John Theurer Cancer Center. Many are eligible for clinical trials designed to offer treatment options that might not otherwise be available.

As a patient in our Center, you will be cared for by one of our 3 board-certified surgeons. Other members of our dedicated team include 2 nurse navigators, a physician assistant, 2 nurse practitioners who both have advanced training, 2 assistants in our clinic, a medical resident, and other healthcare professionals who are all here to help ensure that your experience at HackensackUMC is positive.

Multidisciplinary, collaborative care

The best care is multidisciplinary care—care that runs across specialties and disciplines. As a patient of the Center for Thoracic Surgery, you will have access to all of the facilities and medical expertise that HackensackUMC has to offer. Our surgeons work closely with other disciplines ranging from Anesthesiology to Hematology, Interventional Radiology, Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Radiation Oncology, in order to give you comprehensive care. We are dedicated to the multidisciplinary approach because it provides the best patient outcomes.

There is often more than one way to treat lung, esophageal, or thoracic malignancies, depending on the individual and his or her disease. Our affiliation with The John Theurer Cancer Center allows us to provide the most current and state-of-the-art treatment options for every patient who comes to us with a diagnosis of cancer.

Real help making hard decisions

When it comes to selecting the right treatment approach, experience counts. Our thoracic surgeons, each with years of clinical experience, are actively involved in evaluating patients with cancers of the chest and participating in the treatment planning and decision-making process for these complex and often challenging cases. Often, the solution will be a combination of surgery and additional treatment modalities. Our surgeons have the tools and expertise to evaluate patients with suspicious abnormalities and bring in the appropriate resources to devise and implement a treatment plan. As your partner on the journey, we are here to help you achieve your best possible outcomes using everything we have.
